Currently, one in four adults suffers from sensitive teeth symptoms. This is a condition that can appear and disappear over time.
However, it doesn’t mean that we can ignore sensitive teeth symptoms. On the contrary we should know how to recognise it to avoid unpleasant consequences. The main symptoms of oversensitive teeth are pain and a feeling of discomfort when breathing cold air, brushing, consuming hot, cold, sweet or sour food or drinks. If every time we have contact with these factors and feel a sharp pain located around the base of the tooth, probably we are dealing with tooth hypersensitivity.
It is important to pay attention to such sensitive teeth symptoms as their timely diagnosis and taking of specific actions reduces the risk of even more dangerous problems of the mouth. Additionally, proper care can quickly neutralise all the unpleasant symptoms of tooth hypersensitivity.
How to prevent sensitive teeth?
Hot, cold, or sour stimuli are not the causes of teeth hypersensitivity but they are the triggers of it. The real cause of teeth sensitivity includes gum recession which leads to exposure of the tooth roots and enamel erosion which can result in exposed dentine. You can control the force of brushing teeth using electric toothbrushes which alert to stop scrubbing with warning light when too much pressure is applied. Electric toothbrushes are gentle for teeth and gums and at the same time they remove dental plaque effectively. It has been proven that electric toothbrushes, using rotation-oscillation technology, remove more dental plaque than manual toothbrushes.
Regular, everyday hygiene of the mouth is very important in preventing teeth sensitivity. In order to prevent sensitive teeth, brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes using a good quality toothbrush with soft fibres, and use toothpaste with fluoride, or special toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Ask your dentist to show you how to brush your teeth in order not to damage the gums.
